General description of SPME

principle:

1. phase transfer of analyte from either aqueous sample W or air phase to
sorbent fiber P; pre-concentration of analyte in P according to partition equilibrium:

2. Thermal desorption of analyte from sorbent P into inlet of gas-chromatography
    system

advantages:

  • rather quick and simple
  • no use of organic solvent

disadvantages:

  • extraction efficiency of SPME procedure has to be determined
